Model scales explained: what 1:50, 1:18 and 1:87 really mean

A scale is a promise. 1:50 means the model is one fiftieth of the machine it copies, in every direction. Nothing about that is decorative. It decides how much detail can physically exist, how much shelf space you need, and whether two models look right standing next to each other.

We build in eight scales, from 1:87 up to 1:12. This is what each one is for.

What the number actually means

Divide the real machine by the second number and you have the model. The Mercedes-AMG G 63 4x4² is 4,939 millimetres long, so at 1:12 it works out at 412 millimetres. Our model measures 410. Those two millimetres are rounding, not a different scale.

The arithmetic also works backwards, and that is the more useful direction. Take the length of a model, multiply it by the scale, and you should land within a few centimetres of the real vehicle. It is a quick check on whether something is labelled honestly. It is not a precise measurement, because a model is measured over everything that sticks out, mirrors, spare wheel, tow hook. A model that comes out slightly long is usually carrying an accessory rather than a wrong scale.

The eight scales

Those lengths cover the cars and machines that make up the bulk of each scale. Two kinds of thing sit outside them. The first is separate parts, such as trailers, containers and crane jibs, and the longest single item we make belongs there: the lattice jib set for the Liebherr LTM 11200-9.1 measures 2,600 millimetres assembled. The second is the occasional outsized vehicle, such as the 1:18 Lohr car transporter at 1,100 millimetres.

What these scales are called elsewhere

Several of them carry names that are older than model vehicles, and knowing them makes a collection easier to extend.

1:87 is HO, and the name is simply half of O, the smallest of the gauges Märklin introduced around 1900. It is the most popular model railway scale in the world. 1:64 is S scale, and it is also the nominal size of the pocket sized cars most people already own, although in that part of the toy market the number is often approximate rather than measured. 1:43 goes back to British O gauge, which is drawn at seven millimetres to the foot, or 1:43.5. Die cast cars grew out of that rail scale and spread from Britain to France and the rest of Europe, which is how 1:43 became the classic collector scale for automobiles. 1:32 is Gauge 1, and it doubles as the normal scale for agricultural models, so a 1:32 telehandler stands correctly beside a farm collection.

1:50 is the odd one out. No model railway scale sits there, because O gauge lands at 1:43.5 in Britain, 1:45 in continental Europe and 1:48 in America. 1:50 became the standard of the construction segment for a practical reason instead, explained below.

Why construction machinery is 1:50

Construction equipment is large. A mobile harbour crane works at more than fifty metres. At 1:18 that would be a model nearly three metres long, and at 1:87 the individual track links, handrails and hydraulic lines stop being reproducible. 1:50 is the point where a working machine stays shelf sized and still carries real detail. That is why it is the standard of the segment, and why almost half our range, ninety models, sits there.

The same logic explains 1:87. Our Liebherr LHM 550 harbour crane is still 650 millimetres at that scale, because the model is measured over the boom and the real crane reaches 54 metres out. Some machines are simply too big for anything larger.

Why automobiles are 1:18, 1:43 and 1:64

A car is roughly five metres. At 1:50 it would be a hundred millimetres, too small for an interior, opening doors or a modelled engine bay. 1:18 gives 278 millimetres, which is enough room for all of it, and it is where most of our automobile range sits.

1:43 brings the same car down to 116 millimetres. That is less than half the length and roughly a sixth of the shelf area, which is why long collections tend to live there. The silhouette survives, the engine bay does not.

1:64 goes a step further, to 78 millimetres for a five metre car. At that size a full grid of racing cars, or an entire model range, fits on one shelf. It is also not only a car scale: our Scania 730S V8 with trailer is 270 millimetres at 1:64, which is still shorter than a single tractor unit at 1:18.

1:12 exists for a different reason. It is not about size but about surface: paint, stitching, brake discs and engine detail become visible at a level that smaller scales cannot show. It is also the scale we use for MotoGP motorcycles, where a smaller model would lose the frame and suspension entirely.

The two scales that are easy to overlook

1:32 answers the same question as 1:50, in reverse. Compact machines are small to begin with. A four metre telehandler at 1:50 would be eighty millimetres, with a boom too fine to articulate. At 1:32 it is 125 millimetres, and boom, cab and forks all work as they should.

1:25 follows the same reasoning and is currently a single model, the Jungheinrich ETR 340 reach truck at 105 millimetres. A warehouse truck is compact, so it needs a larger scale to stay a model rather than a token.

The mixing problem, and why 1:55 is not 1:50

Models of the same scale can stand together. Models of similar scales cannot, and the difference is more visible than the numbers suggest.

Take a five metre vehicle. At 1:50 it is 100 millimetres. At 1:55 it is 91 millimetres. Nine millimetres does not sound like much until the two stand side by side, because the eye does not compare lengths, it compares proportions against everything else on the shelf. On a twelve metre truck the gap grows to 22 millimetres. Anything sold as approximately 1:50 will not line up with a true 1:50 collection.

The same trap sits between 1:24 and 1:25. Written down they look interchangeable, and on a five metre vehicle they differ by eight millimetres. Ours is 1:25.

Choosing a scale

Three questions decide it, and none of them is about the machine.

How much space is there? A 1:50 crawler crane with the boom fitted needs more depth than most display cabinets have. Measure the shelf before the model.

Do you collect a theme or a machine? Themed collections work better in one consistent scale. A single showpiece can sit in whatever scale shows it best.

What do you want to see? The larger the scale, the more there is to look at, and the fewer models fit in a lifetime of shelf space.

There is no correct answer. There is only the scale that matches the room you have and the way you like to look at things.
